12 March 2002 (A/ES-10/154-S/2002/242)
Letter sent by Dr. Nasser Al-Kidwa, Ambassador and Permanent
Observer of Palestine to the U.N., to the Secretary-General of the United
Nations, the President of the Security Council, and the President of the
General Assembly: (Over 1200 Palestinians Rounded up, Blindfolded and
Detained)
Last night (Palestine time), Israeli occupying forces once
more invaded the city of Qalqiliya, killing 2 Palestinians, injuring many
others and causing extensive destruction to a great deal of Palestinian
property. The occupying forces rounded up the male population of the city and
detained at least 600 of them, handcuffed and blindfolded. The same practice,
with similar numbers, took place in the refugee camps of Dheisheh near
Bethlehem and in the village of Artas. A few days ago, after invading the city
of Tulkarem and the adjacent refugee camps, Israeli occupying forces rounded
up more than 1,200 Palestinians, many of whom were detained.
The above comes in line with the absolutely mad policy of Mr.
Ariel Sharon and his government aimed at "battering Palestinians" and using
force "without let up", which included attacks against and invasion of many
refugee camps. These attacks also included the destruction of the Headquarters
of President Yasser Arafat in Gaza City, the assassination of two Palestinians
in Occupied East Jerusalem, and even attacks against ambulances and medical
personnel.

this escalating crisis and grave deterioration of the situation in the
