Press Release (10 September 1998)

President Yasser Arafat will be coming to United Nations headquarters in New York to participate in the general debate at the opening of the 53rd session of the General Assembly. He will deliver a statement before the General Assembly plenary on Monday, 28 September 1998. This will mark the first time in the history of the United Nations that an entity which is not a Member State of the United Nations will participate in the general debate of the Assembly. Palestine’s participation comes without restrictions with regard to speaking order in the debate and it represents one of the results of resolution 52/250, which upgraded the representation of Palestine at the United Nations.

During his stay in New York, President Arafat will meet with several world leaders and will also meet with the Secretary-General of the United Nations. A more detailed statement regarding the schedule of his visit will be issued at a later date.
