Preview of the Visit of President Yasser Arafat to New York

President Yasser Arafat arrives in New York in the early afternoon on Saturday, 26 September 1998. On Saturday, he will be meeting with a number of Foreign Ministers and will meet with a delegation of the National Council of Churches. Mr. Arafat will then meet with Ambassador Moratinos, the European Union’s Special Middle East Peace Envoy. In the evening, Mr. Arafat will also meet with U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright.

On Sunday, Mr. Arafat will appear before a gathering organized by the Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation. Shortly thereafter, he will meet with Cardinal John O’Connor. In the evening, Mr. Arafat will meet with a group of American Jewish leaders. A reception will also be given in his honor Sunday evening for the U.N. diplomatic corps, U.N. officials and other dignitaries.

On Monday, he will be meeting with a number of Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers and will address a luncheon at the Council on Foreign Relations. Mr. Arafat will deliver his address to the U.N. General Assembly at approximately 3:45pm. Mr. Arafat will then meet with the U.N. Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan. Later, President Arafat will leave to Washington, D.C. to meet with President Bill Clinton.
