3 July 2001 (A/ES-10/93, S/2001/657)
Letter sent by Dr. Nasser Al-Kidwa, Ambassador and Permanent
Observer of Palestine to the U.N., to the Secretary-General of the United
Nations, the President of the Security Council, and the President of the
General Assembly: (Israeli Assasinations)
Israel, the occupying Power, continues to pursue its policy
of extrajudicial killings of Palestinian civilians. Yesterday night, 3 more
Palestinians were assassinated when Israeli helicopter gunships fired several
rockets at their car with the intent of killing the passengers: Mohammed Ahmed
Besharat, Ayoub Besharat and Sameh Anwar Abu Hineish, in the vicinity of the
village of Qabatiye near the town of Jenin. Also yesterday, Israeli occupying
forces killed 2 Palestinians and claimed that the killing was a result of an
exchange of fire. In addition, a 15-year-old Palestinian boy died yesterday
from bullet wounds sustained on Friday, 29 June 2001.
The above-mentioned assassinations are additional war crimes
committed by Israeli occupying forces for which the government of Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon is fully responsible. The Israeli government effectively
continues with its war crimes, State terrorism and all kinds of atrocities
against the Palestinian people, putting the cease-fire agreement and the plan
for implementation of the recommendations of the Report of the Sharm El-Sheikh
Fact-Finding Committee (Mitchell Report) in serious jeopardy.
We believe that the United Nations, and specifically the
Security Council, must fulfill their responsibility vis-à-vis the current
situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem,
irrespective of the efforts exerted by other parties. The Security Council
should play its role in stopping the continuous Israeli military campaign
against the Palestinian people and in bringing all Israeli atrocities to an
effective end.
Since my last letter to you on 25 June
2001(A/ES-10/92-S/2001/627), 7 more Palestinians have been killed, including
the martyrs mentioned above. (The names of the martyrs are contained in the
annex to the present letter.) Regretfully, this brings the total number of
Palestinian martyrs killed since 28 September 2000 to a total of 512 people.
At the same time, the total number of Palestinian civilians injured, many
severely and permanently, also continues to rise each day.
I am writing this letter in follow-up to my previous 52
letters addressed to you regarding this grave and ongoing situation in the
Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem, dated from 29 September
2000 to 25 June 2001 (A/55/437-S/2000/930; A/55/450-S/2000/957;
